Straight teeth are closely related to oral functions. It helps an individual to effectively bite, chew and speak. Straight teeth enable enhancing the health of teeth and gums ensuring longevity for your teeth. The teeth are also an integral part of your wellness and overall health. Better chewing of your food ensures better digestion. As we age, having properly aligned teeth and jaws can help prevent or lessen oral health problems like tooth decay, gum disease, abnormal tooth surface wear (see photo below), ineffective chewing, or misaligned jaw joints, which can occasionally result in chronic headaches or facial or neck pain. Not just that, well-aligned healthy teeth will ensure that you will continue to enjoy benefits of good health for years to come.
Teeth that function better also tend to look better. An attractive smile is a useful asset. It enhances self-esteem and self-confidence. These are important qualities at every age. A pleasing appearance is a vital component of self-confidence. We often see people hide their smiles with their palms when they are conscious about the way the teeth appear. A person’s self-esteem often improves as orthodontic treatment ensures the teeth, lips and face are in proportion. Dr Arun also has years of experience treating patients from media and movies in orthodontic clinics in Mumbai. Orthodontic treatment does benefit social and career success, as well as improve a person’s general attitude toward life.
You may be surprised to learn that straight teeth with tight contacts are less prone to decay and injury. If the teeth are misaligned, they do not bite and chew efficiently. We often see patients having extensive decay and broken-down teeth on one side of the jaw. This happens due to overuse of that side. This is a result of an inefficient bite on the other side which makes a patient eat only from one side over the years leading to breakdown. Also, if the contacts between the teeth are not tight, it can lead to food lodgement between the teeth. This can cause pain in the gums and make chewing difficult or it can even cause cavities in the places where food gets stuck.
As for injuries to teeth, protruding upper teeth are more likely to be broken in an accident. While sports guards can prevent teeth from trauma while playing some sport, more often than not, the trauma happens at other times. Hence well positioned teeth are protected from such trauma.
